spoon.2Di vol.117 (Dec. 27, 2024) - Interview with Owen's Voice Actor Asanuma Shintao

Shintao Asanuma as Owen
オーエン役 浅沼晋太郎
INTERVIEW

I asked Shintarō Asanuma, who plays Owen, the Northern Wizard known for his fondness for human malice, his ever-present faint smile, and his enigmatic behavior, about Owen's appeal and the highlights of the anime.

"Owen has a (somewhat twisted) affection and overwhelming obsession for things he finds interesting, while being shockingly indifferent to anything that doesn't catch his interest. I think that all-or-nothing personality is what makes him so compelling."

Owen (VA: Shintarō Asanuma)

A sharp-tongued, sarcastic individual who enjoys human fear and malice. He is considered a dangerous person, even among other wizards. He has a past grudge with Cain, a wizard from Central Country, and their relationship is particularly hostile.

Q: Having portrayed Owen for some time now, you've seen many facets of his character. How do you perceive him? Could you share what aspects you find most appealing?

A: "To put it simply, he’s a 'contrarian,' but that doesn't fully capture him. He has a (twisted) affection and overwhelming obsession for the things that interest him, yet he’s astonishingly indifferent to anything that doesn’t. That all-or-nothing nature is what makes him so intriguing. At the same time, I respect how he has absolute confidence in his own strength and convictions."

Q: Owen enjoys human malice and often behaves in ways that mislead others. What do you focus on when portraying him?

A: "I try to create a sense of instability by occasionally disrupting the expected rhythm—changing pitch, speed, or volume in my speech to throw off the listener."

Q: As you approached playing Owen in the anime, what kind of plan did you have in mind? Also, did you discover anything new about the character through the experience?

A: "One key difference between a game and an anime is that, in anime, physical distance between characters is visually established. I made a conscious effort not to let Owen be constrained by that. I just can't imagine Owen being the type to think, ‘Oh, the other person is far away, so I should speak a little louder’ (laughs)."

Q: If you recorded alongside other cast members, what were your thoughts on the interactions? Were there any particularly memorable or impactful scenes for you?

A: "Of course, Owen’s interactions with Cain and Mithra were significant, but what stood out the most was his exchanges with the Sage. Since Owen never directly conversed with them in the game or the drama readings, it felt fresh, and I think it gave me a deeper understanding of his character."

Q: What are your impressions of the Northern Wizards (Snow, White, Mithra, and Bradley)? Also, if you have a favorite exchange involving Owen, please share it.

A: "If we imagine Owen as a cat, then Snow and White would be the nagging, overbearing owners. Mithra would be the dog living in the same house—pretending to be indifferent while always scheming to mess with him somehow. As for Bradley, I think Owen treats him like the youngest in the family, a mischievous child (laughs)."

Q: This issue features Cain and Owen on the cover. Could you share your impressions of Cain and how you perceive the relationship between Cain and Owen?

A: "‘Twisted love’—that phrase sums it up completely. I can't help but wonder: if that episode had never happened, if Cain had acted differently back then, would Owen have turned out to be a different kind of wizard? But at the same time, I feel like no matter what happened, Cain would still be Cain."

Q: In the anime, the Sage (Masaki Akira) has been given a voice for the first time. What are your impressions of the Sage? Also, was there anything you consciously focused on when portraying Owen’s interactions with them?

A: "They feel very pure, transparent, and incredibly straightforward. Precisely because of that, I think Owen—who has spent so long seeing only filth and horror—finds them amusing and interesting. Perhaps he even has a desire to stain or corrupt them in some way. At the same time, he probably gets irritated when the Sage unknowingly pokes at the sore spots he’d rather keep hidden (laughs). When voicing Owen’s conversations with the Sage, I focus on making Owen’s presence feel more fluid and ambiguous, to contrast with the Sage’s unwavering straightforwardness."

Q: "Promise of Wizard" is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. Looking back on your involvement with the series, what have you gained as an actor, or what has the story given you?

A: "One memorable experience was when I met Kaminaga-kun, who plays Owen in the stage adaptation, at a different worksite. I shared with him some of the things I focus on when playing Owen, thinking it might be useful to him. In the process of verbalizing what I had been doing instinctively, I realized, 'I thought I was acting on instinct, but I was actually making these conscious choices.' I hadn’t often analyzed my own performance in a theoretical way after the fact, so that was a valuable learning experience for me."

Q: Lastly, could you share a message for the readers who are looking forward to the anime?

A: "To the Sages who have enjoyed the game—thank you for waiting. Look forward to not only the character interactions but also how those spells you’ve seen time and again are brought to life, and how the creatures from the game’s world are depicted. And to the Sages stepping into this world for the first time through the anime—please, immerse yourselves fully in this beautiful yet cruel fairy tale."

Someday, in the Smiling Kitchen - Short Story (3)

Heathcliff: Lord Arthur, is this all the vegetables we need for the rice porridge?

Arthur: Yeah, that should be it. Let’s get started...

Bradley: Well, look who it is. The prince of the Central Country and the little lord from the East.

Bradley: What, it’s just the two of you? Where’s the cook at?

Arthur: Nero’s in the Eastern Country right now with Riquet and the others.

Heathcliff: There’s been some ghost trouble in a town over there. They went to investigate it.

Bradley: Huh. I’m feelin’ a bit hungry, but if Nero’s not here, I’ll just hit up someplace else.

Arthur: How about ojiya (rice porridge)? We can make some for you too.

Heathcliff: Lord Arthur and I were just preparing a light meal together.

Bradley: Heh. A prince and some noble kid cookin’, huh?

Bradley: Alright, I’m in. If you two, who’re used to eatin’ the fanciest crap, are makin’ it, it better not taste bad.

Heathcliff: Haha, hearing that makes me a little nervous...

Arthur: I’ll do my best to make it suit your taste, Bradley. Now then…

Arthur: For the carrots, do you want them shaped like a bear or a rabbit?

Bradley & Heathcliff: Huh?

Arthur: If you don’t mind them looking a little uneven, I can even do a frog shape. I’m still practicing, though.

Bradley: Wait, wait, wait! What kinda ridiculous question is that?

Heathcliff: Lord Arthur, you can cut vegetables into animal shapes?

Arthur: Yes. When I showed Riquet during a camping trip, he was absolutely delighted.

Arthur: On days like today, when Nero isn’t around, I practice occasionally as a way to unwind.

Arthur: …Now that I think of it, Heathcliff, didn’t you once carve carrots into rose shapes?

Arthur: Shino proudly showed it off to me before.

Heathcliff: Ah… I’m sorry you had to see something so embarrassing back then...

Heathcliff: I was so impressed by the rose-shaped carrots made by Blanchett’s chef that I got really into it for a while...

Bradley: Hey, don’t just go getting all excited on your own!

Bradley: I don’t care what kinda shape you make, there’s no room for veggies on my plate!

Arthur: Really? That’s a shame. I thought this would be a perfect chance to show off my skills...

Heathcliff: Um, if it’s alright with you, I’d love to see a frog-shaped carrot.

Heathcliff: I don’t often get the chance to cook alongside you, Lord Arthur… Would that be okay?

Arthur: Of course not! I’d be delighted. Let’s get started right away.

Heathcliff: Yes! Then I’ll start by making dashi with “a touch of kombu.”

Heathcliff: I’ve laid out all the ingredients on the table, so next, we just need to grab the pot—

Bradley: Oi, little lord from the East. You’re forgetting something important.

Heathcliff: Huh?

Bradley: Top-right shelf. Third drawer from the edge, second one from the bottom. Open it.

Heathcliff: Uh... Let me see... This is—!

Arthur: Crystal salt! The kind said to be worth as much as a gemstone with just a single pinch! It’s the finest quality salt!

Bradley: It’s the Eastern cook’s prized secret stash. Don’t forget to add it.

Heathcliff: Hmm, isn’t this the kind of special seasoning you only use for important occasions? Are we really allowed to just use it like this...?

Bradley: Tch. What are you worried about? If it were really that important, they’d at least put a lock on it.

Bradley: Besides, I can’t eat that guy’s cooking. This doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of that.

Anime Collaboration Campaign - Short Story (4)

Arthur: I am Arthur. And this here is my friend, Arthur.

Arthur: ...This is a little game where you introduce yourself as though you’re a friend.

Chloe: Oh! That sounds kind of fun!

Chloe: Introducing yourself can feel a bit awkward, but if you think of yourself as a friend, it might make it easier to speak honestly.

Chloe: Or... maybe it’ll make it even more awkward? What do you think, Rustica?

Rustica: I think it’s a wonderful idea. Seeing yourself as someone else might help you discover new charms about yourself.

Rustica: Let me try it right away. Is that all right, Lord Arthur?

Arthur: Of course. Please, Rustica.

Chloe: You’ve got this, Rustica!

Rustica: I am Rustica. And this is my friend, Rustica.

Rustica: He is a harpsichordist who loves music deeply.

Rustica: He’s traveling the world in search of his vanished bride. And during his journey...

Rustica: He met his apprentice, Chloe, and became a Sage's Wizard. Please, take good care of him.

Arthur: Splendid!

Chloe: So cool! That sounded just perfect!

Rustica: Thank you.

Arthur: May I try it next?

Chloe & Rustica: Go ahead!

Arthur: I am Arthur. And this is my friend, Arthur.

Arthur: He’s full of curiosity, and while he fails often, he never fears a challenge.

Arthur: He always strives to learn and grow, so he can befriend everyone. Please, be his friend.

Chloe: Wow! That’s wonderful! I definitely want to be friends!

Rustica: If someone were friends with Lord Arthur, it feels like they could overcome any hardship together.

Arthur: Thank you!

Arthur: Finally, it’s Chloe’s turn. Should we wait a little longer until you feel ready?

Chloe: Nope! I’m good! I’ll give it a try!

Chloe: I’m Chloe! And this is my friend, Chloe!

Chloe: Chloe loves making clothes and dreams of becoming a tailor! Oh... um... that’s his dream!

Chloe: Sometimes he loses confidence or feels down, but he’s doing his best with the help of those around him!

Chloe: If you don’t mind, please be friends with Chloe, too! Uh... nice to meet you!

Arthur & Rustica: Wow!

Rustica: That was wonderful, Chloe.

Arthur: It made me want to become friends with you all over again!

Chloe: Hehe. Thanks!

Rustica: So, Lord Arthur, Chloe. Now that we’ve introduced ourselves as friends...

Rustica: How about we imagine watching their group dating event (Goukon) and enjoy it?

Chloe: Huh?

Arthur: Mixer (Goukon)... the celebratory gathering of new encounters that the Sage taught us about, right?

Arthur: That sounds fun. Let’s observe our friends’ group dating event and enjoy it.

Chloe: Wait, but... if we’re pretending to be our own friends, those "us" don’t actually exist, right?

Chloe: How are we supposed to observe them?

Rustica: Roughly.

Arthur: Let’s just roughly imagine it.

Chloe: "Roughly," huh... Got it! Let’s give it a shot!

Arthur, Chloe, & Rustica: ...

Rustica: Haha...

Arthur: Heh...

Chloe: (Oh, they’re totally imagining it roughly.)

Rustica: This version of Chloe was very proactive.

Arthur: Yes. His energy and cheerfulness were infectious, and it really lightened the mood.

Chloe: Phew! I’ll keep working hard to make more friends!

Rustica: Oh... Look at that. It seems they’ve started pairing off to talk in twos.

Chloe: Really?

Arthur: It’s easier to have deeper conversations in smaller groups.

Rustica: Lord Arthur appears to be having an intimate conversation with Shylock.

Arthur: Shylock always creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. He even invited me to sit in the shade with him.

Chloe: Why is this making my heart race...?

Rustica: Ah...

Arthur: Hmm?

Chloe: What?

Rustica: Look at this. Lord Arthur is doing something bold and provocative...

Chloe: Hey, stop! Don’t go there, Rustica!

Rustica: What’s the matter, Chloe?

Chloe: You were about to bring up something borderline inappropriate, weren’t you?! Sure, bold and provocative stuff might get huge laughs out west, but—!

Chloe: This isn’t Mur or Shylock we’re talking about! It’s a 17-year-old prince here!

Arthur: You don’t need to worry about me.

Chloe: No, Arthur!!

Arthur: It’s fine.

Chloe: No, no, no! Bold and provocative is absolutely off-limits!!

Rustica: I see... What a pity.

Rustica: But you see, the story has already started playing out in my head. Can I share it anyway?

Chloe: No! Hold it in for now!

Arthur: It’s all right. Go ahead and tell it. I’m too curious to let it go.

Rustica: Really?

Arthur: Yes. I’m itching to know.

Chloe: No, Arthur! If you do, Lord Oz will scold you for being "too western!"

Rustica: Then I’ll proceed. Lord Arthur, before Shylock...

Chloe: TOO WESTERN!!

Rustica: ...boldly and provocatively sank his teeth into a spicy beef skewer.

Arthur: A provocative beef skewer... So, it was spicy?

Rustica: Exactly.

Chloe: You should’ve said that from the start!!!

Arthur: Bold and provocative... chomp!

Arthur: Like this?

Rustica: Wonderful! Shylock would surely be delighted, knowing his hand-grilled skewers were appreciated.

Chloe: Wait, did Shylock really need to go to the shade to grill those skewers? Was that necessary for the "intimate" atmosphere?

Arthur: Haha. Mur is also covered in charcoal as he eagerly bites into a skewer.

Arthur: Since we’ve come this far, let’s pretend all three of us are eating together.

Rustica: By all means.

Chloe: Man, that was nerve-wracking.

Arthur: All right, together now...

Arthur, Chloe, & Rustica: Chomp!

spoon.2Di vol.117 (Dec. 27, 2024) - Interview with Cain's Voice Actor Kanbara Daichi

Daichi Kanbana as Cain
カイン役 神原大地
INTERVIEW

Cain, a former knight commander of Central Country, takes up arms as a Sage's Wizard to battle the "Great Calamity." Bright, approachable, and sincere with everyone, Cain's charm has been brought to life by Daichi Kanbana. We spoke to Kanbana about his experience portraying Cain, his impressions of recording for the anime, and the various facets of Cain's character he has encountered along the way.

Cain - CV: Daichi Kanbana

A former knight commander of the central nation. A friendly, reliable, big-brother type. Skilled with the sword, he’s strong even without using magic. While he’s good at getting along with everyone, the northern wizard Owen is a notable exception.

"I believe Cain is someone who always lives in accordance with his loyalty to his lord and the justice he holds within himself. I find it truly admirable how he doesn’t let his pride get in the way of doing what’s truly important."

Q: Through your time playing Cain, you’ve seen many aspects of his character. How would you describe him? Could you share what you find most appealing about him?

A:
"I think Cain is a man who always lives true to his loyalty to his lord and his sense of justice. Whether it's his conduct as a knight serving his lord, Arthur, or moments when he chooses actions that stray from knightly conventions, at the core of it all is his unique sense of justice. If it’s for his lord or his comrades, Cain doesn’t concern himself with how others perceive him. I find it incredibly admirable that he doesn’t let his pride stand in the way of doing what’s truly important."

Q: What do you focus on when portraying Cain?

A:
"I focus on being natural. I think Cain is simply a very cool guy. Personally, I believe that truly cool people don’t try to show off. Cain has moments where he fights earnestly or observes keenly, but he also laughs heartily and dances with his comrades. Sometimes he even tries to show off a little, but that makes him all the more human, which I love. All these seemingly disparate sides are facets of Cain. His ability to connect with anyone without putting up a front is what makes him so incredibly cool, and I try to express that in my performance."

Q: How did you approach this role differently when preparing for the anime adaptation? Were there any new realizations from the experience?

A:
"I planned to approach it with Cain’s natural style, but it turned out to be quite challenging. During the game recordings, I was given a lot of freedom in terms of timing and expression. For the anime, however, the timing was predetermined, and the direction involved new input from the sound director and others, so when I performed the way I did for the game, a lot of it ended up being NG (not good). Through this process, I realized that the production team’s vision of Cain is probably more knightly than what I had in mind, so I adjusted my portrayal to align with that. I hope viewers can enjoy seeing this side of Cain in the anime as well."

Q: If you recorded the dubbing sessions with other cast members, could you share your thoughts on the interactions during those scenes, any particularly memorable moments, or scenes where you felt a strong sense of accomplishment?

A:
"The scene where Cain explains the world to the Sage for the first time stands out as especially memorable. I had the chance to record alongside Yumiri Hanamori, who plays the Sage, so I think I was able to deliver those lines with a greater sense of realism. Another favorite moment was when Cain makes a quick retort during a conversation about unfamiliar foods with Riquet. I adjusted my performance during rehearsals and the final recording to match Riquet’s delivery, and it felt like it clicked perfectly. That was probably my favorite performance.

Q: What are your impressions of the mages from Central Country (Arthur, Oz, and Riquet), and do you have any favorite interactions between them and Cain?

A:
"Arthur, as Cain’s lord, is remarkable for his efforts to stand on the same level as his subordinates. That quality is part of why Cain is so devoted to him. Oz is my personal favorite—there’s something captivating about a character who is the ‘strongest,’ and I’m drawn to characters who never betray others. As for Riquet, the more you get to know him, the more his stubborn honesty grows on you. His serious concerns can sometimes seem endearing when viewed from the outside, and I think Cain might feel the same way about him."

Q: This issue features Cain and Owen on the cover. Could you share your impressions of Owen and your thoughts on the relationship between Cain and Owen?

A:
"When I first started playing Cain, I found Owen very unsettling. He’s a being of immense power, and it’s hard to grasp what he’s thinking. Recently, however, their relationship has begun to evolve. I think Cain now feels that he doesn’t want Owen to be left alone. Even if it’s vague, Cain might be trying to understand what Owen truly desires, even if he doesn’t fully comprehend it yet."

Q: In the anime, Masaki Akira as the Sage has a voice for the first time. What are your impressions of the Sage, and was there anything specific you kept in mind when portraying interactions between Cain and the Sage?

A:
"When I played the game, I used to read the Sage’s lines out loud myself, so hearing the Sage in the anime felt very close to how I imagined them: a bit reserved but able to act decisively when it matters, with the strength to ask for help when needed. Cain interacts with the Sage as someone just as important to him as his loyalty to Arthur, though in a different way."

Q: "Promise of Wizard" is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. Over the course of your involvement, what have you gained as a performer, and what has the story given you?

A:
"I believe Cain represents one of the highest points in my acting journey. After the first recording session, the staff told me, ‘It felt like Cain was really there in the wizard’s manor,’ which left a strong impression on me. Often, after delivering Cain’s lines, I find myself thinking, ‘Oh, so that’s how Cain would say it,’ as if I’m learning about him along the way. Perhaps that’s why the audience feels Cain’s words are truly alive."

Q: Could you share a message with readers who are looking forward to the anime broadcast?

A:
"One of the standout features of Promise of Wizard is its compelling story, and I feel that the anime has taken great care to honor that narrative. Cain plays a significant role in the early episodes, so I approached those scenes with the aim of fully immersing viewers in the world. Please look forward to experiencing the expanded world of Promise of Wizard in the anime."

Someday, in the Smiling Kitchen - Short Story (2)

White: 《Noscomnia.》

White: Hmm! With this, the recipe notebook is complete!

Owen: We’ve created something absolutely disgusting. Especially that trick you threw in at the end—completely unnecessary.

Oz: What are you doing?

White: Oh, Oz. I was making a recipe to give to Snow, all while fending off Owen’s interference.

Owen: Calling it interference is so mean. I was just giving you some top-notch advice to help you twins make up with each other.

White: How is a poisoned recipe supposed to help us make up? I’ve already told you: we’re not planning on “matching in death” anytime soon.

Oz: You’re reconciling through cooking?

Owen: A little while ago, Snow made a dish for White, but it turned out to be a charred mess.

Owen: White’s reaction to eating it was so harsh that Snow started crying. Then Snow left the Magic Manor.

White: That’s mostly true, but… your phrasing has a certain edge to it.

White: Also, Snow didn’t leave the magical academy. Snow went to Nero to learn how to cook.

Oz: “Learn how to cook,” huh… I think Riquet or Cain mentioned something about that.

White: That’s right! For the sake of sweet, earnest Snow-chan, I decided to come up with my own recipe.

White: It’s filled with love, crafted with the hope that we’ll make something delicious together next time...

Oz: ……….

White: Hey, hey, Oz-chan, don’t run away just because it’s a hassle~.

White: Take a look at my love-filled recipe!

White’s Voice: “Before baking flaming potatoes, it’s best to chill them with ice first! Together, let’s Noscomnia!“

Oz and Owen: ……….

Oz: The recipe is being read aloud in White’s voice.

White: Hearing it in my voice makes it more endearing, doesn’t it? Well, if you leave it alone, the magic will only last about three days.

Owen: It’s honestly disgusting. If it were me, I’d turn it to ash the moment I heard the first word.

White: It’s not disgusting! It’s adorable!

White: Not only the recipe, but I’ve also included a loving message from me. Here, listen!

White’s Voice: “I was a bit surprised when you gave me that dish, but I love every version of you, Snow-chan... Big love! ♪”

White: How about that? Isn’t it the ultimate recipe notebook?

Oz: Indeed.

Owen: Haha. Oz doesn’t care about you two at all.

White: Not understanding our fiery love... you both have a long way to go.

White: Why don’t you try expressing your love for Snow as well? Write it on an empty page, and my voice will passionately read it aloud for you.

Oz: I refuse. I have no intention of playing along with your games.

Owen: You’d just make it say whatever you want, wouldn’t you? Absolutely not.

White: Oh, don’t say that! I’ll thoroughly guide you on what kind of words would make Snow happy.

White: I wonder if Snow-chan will be pleased~? I can’t wait to give the recipe to him!

Someday, in the Smiling Kitchen - Short Story (1)

Rutile: Murr-san, before we start cooking, here’s an apron and a hat for you.

Murr: Wow, this is serious business!

Rutile: If we’re going to hold a cooking class, I thought we should start by getting into the proper attire.

Rutile: Thank you for inviting me today, Murr-san.

Murr: Sure thing! I heard Nero was starting a cooking class, and it sounded fun, so I decided to copy the idea!

Murr: I invited you, Rutile, because I thought you’d probably be good at cooking!

Rutile: I’m honored to hear that! At home, I’ve been cooking meals for Mitile, so I’m fairly confident in my skills.

Rutile: Well then, shall we get started?

Murr: With Professor Rutile!

Rutile: And Murr-san!

Rutile & Murr: Cooking class~!

Murr: Da-da-da-dum!

Rutile: Oh my, what a lovely melody!

Murr: The previous Kenja-sama used to sing it sometimes while cooking! So, Professor Rutile, what are we making today?

Rutile: We’re making Lorito de Pollo, a classic dish from the southern country.

Murr: Sounds great! But I also want to eat paella!

Rutile: Paella, you say?

Murr: Yeah, it’s a celebratory dish from the port towns in the western country. I even brought some wine to pair with the paella!

Rutile: Oh, that sounds wonderful! But, uh, we only prepared chicken and vegetables...

Murr: No problem! We’ll make chicken paella instead.

Rutile: Ah, I see. In that case, why don’t we divide up the ingredients?

Murr: Let’s do that! First, we’ll cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces, but...

Murr: ...

Rutile: Murr-san, is something wrong?

Murr: What do you think counts as “bite-sized”?

Rutile: Hmm, I’d say pieces small enough to eat in one bite would be just the right size.

Murr: But doesn’t that depend on the person? Like, if it were Mithra, they might be able to eat a whole chicken in one bite!

Rutile: I think even they couldn’t fit an entire chicken in their mouth...

Rutile: But Leno-san also has a big mouth. Since Mitile’s is only about half of Leno-san’s, larger pieces might be hard for him to eat.

Murr: Then let’s use Rutile as the standard! We’ll call it the Rutile Standard!

Rutile: That sounds reasonable! All right, Murr-san, you handle the chicken, and I’ll cut the vegetables.

Murr: No need for that!

Rutile: Huh?

Murr: I’ve already cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces, and while I was at it, I prepped all the other ingredients too.

Rutile: What?! When did you do that?!

Murr: It’s one of those common occurrences in cooking class, you know.

Rutile: I-Is that so...?

Murr: Now we’ll toss all of this into the magical frying pan, and...

Murr: It’s done in no time!

Rutile: What a delicious aroma~. This is definitely going to pair well with some wine!

Murr: Absolutely! Let’s open the wine right away.

Rutile: Oh, the bottle’s empty...?

Murr: 《Eanul Rambul!》!

Rutile: Whoa! Wine is pouring out of the bottle nonstop from the mouth!?

Murr: It’s a magical wine bottle! It keeps pouring wine until you say “Stop!”

Rutile: Wow, that’s amazing!

Rutile & Murr: To delicious paella and endless wine...

Rutile & Murr: Cheers!

spoon.2Di vol.117 (Dec. 27, 2024) - Interview with Cain & Owen

 Interview with Cain & Owen

This issue’s cover features Cain and Owen, who answered four questions for us!

Q1. What are your impressions of each other?
Cain:
He's a dangerous and terrifying wizard. My left eye is proof of that. He’s a creepy and unpleasant guy who can steal someone’s eye and laugh it off like it’s nothing... But to face the calamity, I’ll need his power too. I have to figure out how to approach him and find a way to work together.

Owen:
He’s a ridiculous guy who swings his sword around without using magic, devoting himself to humans. I exposed him completely, even taking his eyeball. In the Central Kingdom, wizards can’t become knights, can they? Oh, how pitiful. That’s why, even though he lost his title, I still call him “knight” as a little courtesy. Aren’t I kind?

Q2. What’s your impression of the new Sage (Akira)?
Cain:
They got caught up in something dangerous before they even knew left from right. Even though I had no right to stop them from following whoever they chose, they looked me straight in the eye, listened to what I had to say, and chose to side with us. I’m truly grateful. For Akira, I’ll do anything I can.

Owen:
We’ve just met, so I don’t really know yet, but I want to have lots of conversations. About what they like, what they hate, about the Sage themself... I want them to bare everything, from the messy, chaotic, soft, and deep parts of their heart. If they do that, I’m sure we’ll become great friends.

Q3. What do you think about the wizards from the Central Country and the Northern Country?
Cain:
I never expected Prince Arthur to be summoned. It’s an honor to stand alongside him as a fellow wizard of the Central Country. Riquet is reckless but endearing, and Oz is a bit difficult, but he’s not impossible to talk to. I’ll do my best to make us into a good team!

Owen:
I hate the twins—they’re too naggy. Mithra is fine to meet every now and then, but I don’t like how he suddenly changes his mind and starts attacking. Bradley annoys me because he occasionally says cheeky things. Still, I’m forced to see them every year whether I like it or not. It’s such a bothersome and troublesome role.

Q4. How do you spend the New Year?
Cain:
Singing, dancing, drinking, and partying all night long! But I still stay on alert in case of emergencies. Back when I was in the knight order, we’d all crash on the floor together so we wouldn’t be late for training the next day. In the end, we’d always scramble to get ready at the last minute, but even that is a good memory now.

Owen:
Nothing changes. I look out over the dazzling snowy fields reflecting the moonlight, feel the icy wind on my skin, and hear wolves howling in the distance... Then, before I know it, the night has passed. And just like that, another unchanging day begins.

Anime Collaboration Campaign - Short Story (3)

Snow: Hohoho! Today, I’ll introduce myself as if I were a friend!

Shino: Introduce yourself as if you were a friend?

White: Hohoho! For us twins, it’s all the same anyway!

Snow &White: Snow, White, myself, or even a friend—it’s all the same!

Shino: The same?

Snow & White: The same!

Snow: If you like, I could even pretend to be White...

White: Or I could pretend to be Snow and introduce myself!

Shino: Isn’t that just introducing someone else, not yourself?

Snow: It’s not!

White: It’s a game where we pretend to be twins introducing ourselves as friends!

Shino: That’s so confusing. I can’t tell you two apart, but fine. Go ahead and try it.

Snow: I am White! And this person is my friend, White!

White: Wow, White-chan! As beautiful as freshly fallen snow today, too!!

Snow: Thank you!! I think so too!!

White: White is happy~! Snow is happy~!

Shino: Wait.

White: What is it?

Shino: I’m getting confused.

Snow & White: Oh my.

Shino: Who are you?

Snow: I’m White.

White: Snow is pretending to be me and introducing me as if I were a friend.

Shino: Snow is White, and White is White... I see. Go on.

White: I am Snow! And this person is my friend, Snow!

Shino: Huh?

Snow: Wow! Snow-chan! As lovely as freshly fallen snow today too~!!

White: Thank you! I think so too!!

Snow: Oh my! White is happy~! Snow is happy~!

White: Let’s do some fan service! Sparkle!

Snow: Kyaa~! I’ll do some fan service too! Sparkle!

White: Kyaa~! Whether it’s Snow or White, I forgot which, but they’re so cool~!

Shino: You forgot which one you are!

Snow: Let’s go with White! White-chan is graceful, terrifying, the strongest, but a bit of a jealous type—that’s his only flaw!

White: Wrong.

Snow: Huh?

White: That’s wrong. The reason I didn’t forgive you wasn’t jealousy.

White: It’s because you tried to betray our ideal form, so I was ready to put an end to you with my own hands.

Snow: Mmm…

Shino: Hey. Stop having such a heavy conversation so early in the morning.

Snow: Alright, let’s leave it at that! Now it’s Shino’s turn!

Shino: I’m good. I don’t want to be friends with myself.

White: What if you had a twin?

Shino: A twin?

Snow: What if you had a twin sibling?

Shino: If I had a twin? We’d definitely not get along.

White: Hohoho! You can’t know that until you try talking about it!

Snow & White: Noscomnia.

Shino?: ...

Shino: Wha...!? Another me!?

Snow: Hohoho! With our magic, such a thing is simple!

White: We’ve created your twin! It should last for at least a day!

Shino: What!?

Shino?: Yo. I’m Shino’s twin, Nosh.

Shino: That name is way too lazy!

Nosh?: So, you’re my twin, Shino? Awesome. You’re way too cool. I’ll give you some fan service.

Shino: Cut it out!!

Nosh?: Don’t be shy. You’re the strongest scythe wielder around. Be more confident.

Shino: I am confident! And you’ve been so loud this whole time—

Nosh?: Oh, you are confident! Good for you! Alright, let’s go find Heath and get him to praise you. Come on, follow me!

Shino: Stop it, you idiot!! Hold on! Hey…!

Snow & White: ...

Snow: Huh!? Isn’t my twin, White-chan, even cuter than usual today~!?

White: What are you saying? Your twin, Snow-chan, is even cuter than usual today~!?

Snow: Oh, what a surprise~!

White: Right~!

Snow & White: Kya kya!

Tea Leaves Unfold, Sharing a Time of Fellowship - Short Story (3)

Shylock: Nero, what should we do with this salad?

Nero: Ah, let’s see... Once the quiche has cooled down a bit, could you plate it together with the salad?

Nero: The serving plates are all in that cupboard over there, so feel free to use whichever you like.

Shylock: Understood.

Nero: Sorry about this, having you help out with the preparations.

Shylock: It’s no trouble at all. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend today’s tea party either.

Shylock: I’m actually grateful for the chance to be of assistance to everyone.

Nero: Is that so? Well, I’m glad to hear it. I’ll have to head out around midday myself.

Nero: If you can handle plating and tidying up, I can focus entirely on the cooking. You’re efficient, after all.

Nero: ...Oh, the canelés turned out great. While they’re cooling, I’ll finish up the tart.

Shylock: As always, I’m truly enchanted.

Shylock: To create such beautiful dishes without using magic…

Shylock: This fruit jelly, for example—it’s so exquisite that one might want to display it in a jeweler’s showcase.

Nero: Haha, that’s too much praise. But if you’re saying that, I guess it’s good enough.

Nero: This time, it’s a tea party meant to strengthen bonds, right? What was it called again… uh, something like torture... (*note, the word he uses is 拷問 (goumon) when what he means is 合コン (goukon)

Shylock: You mean a “mixer”?

Nero: Yeah, that’s it. So, I figured I’d serve something fancy and stylish to make a good impression.

Shylock: With the pride of the Magic Manor’s chef showcasing his skills like this, I’m sure everyone will leave both visually and gastronomically satisfied.

Shylock: Now then, it seems the dirty dishes are piling up, so I’ll take care of those.

Nero: Oh, thanks.

Nero: Alright, next is the dip to go with the crackers.

Nero: Plenty of nuts and cheese… Hmm, this seasoning should do it.

Nero: Shylock, here you go.

Shylock: ...

Shylock: (This spoon… Is he asking me to taste it?)

Nero: ...Oh, sorry about that.

Shylock: (Takes a bite)

Nero: !?

Shylock: …Hmm, delicious.

Shylock: Nero, you’re unexpectedly bold, aren’t you?

Nero: No, it’s just... uh… It’s a habit from always doing this with the Sage and the kids—I didn’t even think about it.

Nero: I mean, even though your hands were busy with the dishes, it was still disrespectful of me to do that, especially with you.

Shylock: Not at all. I was a little surprised, but that’s all.

Shylock: If anything, being fed by you makes the food taste even better, I think.

Shylock: Could I have another bite?

Nero: No, no… That’s definitely not happening. Next time, eat it yourself.

Shylock: Heh… That’s a shame.

Anime Collaboration Campaign - Short Story (2)

Before I post the translation here, I want to make a note about a word that Bradley uses a lot in this story - てめえ (temee). It comes up several times in the dialogue. Essentially, Temee is one way to say "you." It is considered rougher/ruder than other words. However, it can also be used for "I," "myself," "oneself," "yourself," "herself," "himself." This is why Bradley's use of the word causes a lot of confusion in the story.

I am leaving Temee in romaji rather than translating it or trying to work around it and use another pronoun.

Now, on with the short story.

Bradley: Today, we're going do the thing where Temee introduces Temee as a pal to everyone.

Bradley: Alright, let’s get started... Hey. What’s with the staring?

Oz: ...

Oz: What is “Temee”?

Bradley: It means “you.” Refers to oneself. Temee is oneself.

Oz: ...

Oz: If you’re not going to call me by my name, then what are you calling me?

Bradley: Temee.

Oz: ...?

Faust: I get how you feel. When I first heard Bradley saying "Temee," I had no idea who he was referring to, either.

Faust: I thought about it so much that I even started to suspect he was talking to some invisible familiar named Temee.

Bradley: You’re overthinking it, you noisy bunch, Temee and all.

Oz: What do you call yourself?

Bradley: Temee.

Oz: ...?

Faust: I understand.

Bradley: You’d better understand.

Oz: ...What?

Oz: ...
...What?

Faust: I get how you feel. I truly do.

Bradley: Figure out which Temee I’m talking about already!

Oz: ...

Oz: Just move the conversation forward.

Bradley: Alright then! First off, I’ll introduce myself as my own friend.

Bradley: I’m Bradley! And this here is my pal, the strongest man in history—Bradley.

Bradley: Fearless, cunning, brilliant, and heroic! Once he sets his sights on a target, whether it’s a mighty foe or a national treasure...

Bradley: Bang! One strike and it’s all over. Watch out for the world’s most dangerous man—Bradley!

Bradley: If you’re ready to risk it all, then tonight... come closer.

Bradley: If he’s in a good mood, he might even treat you to a drink.

Bradley: Hah... Guess that’s about right.

Faust: That was good.

Oz: ...

Bradley: Don’t just sit there clapping like a fool. You two, give it a try. C’mon, you Curse-seller!

Faust: Me...?

Faust: I’m Faust. And this here is my friend, Faust.

Faust: ...Hmm... Well, I know a lot about curses.

Faust: ...
...I’m not exactly a fun guy to talk to.

Bradley: Don’t be so gloomy about it. You’re introducing a friend—highlight the good stuff!

Faust: Good stuff...

Faust: He has nice black glasses.

Bradley: Black glasses? Guess you’re oddly fond of those.

Faust: Chloe complimented them, said they were stylish. They give off a dark, cursed vibe that suits me.

Bradley: You’re happy about the "dark" part?

Faust: Heh... well, I am a Curse-seller, after all. What do you think, Oz?

Oz: ...

Oz: I prefer your bare face.

Faust: You think it looks darker without the glasses?

Oz: No. It’s just better when I can see your face.

Bradley: Nobody asked for your preferences, Temee.

Oz: ...Temee?

Faust: I understand.

Bradley: You’d better.

Oz: ...

Oz: From now on, "Temee" is forbidden.

Bradley: There it is, the tyrannical, selfish demon king!

Faust: Unilateral oppression isn’t good. Don’t throw a tantrum. Look, it’s your turn now, Oz.

Oz: I am Oz.

Oz: My Temee is Oz.

Bradley: Wrong.

Oz: It’s not wrong.

Bradley: Don’t argue with me.

Faust: Oz, let’s not use "Temee."

Oz: Did you hear that, Bradley?

Bradley: Hah? I’m going to keep using it. No matter what anyone says, I’ll use it for the rest of my life!

Faust: Come on, don’t fight. You’ve lived more than three times his age—act like an adult.

Oz: ...

Oz: I am Oz.

Oz: He is my friend... ...

Faust: What’s wrong?

Oz: I have no friends.

Bradley: Swallow that thought! That’s the whole point of this exercise!

Faust: How about calling him an acquaintance? Introduce us to your acquaintance, Oz.

Oz: ...

Oz: His name is Oz. There’s no one who doesn’t know his name.

Oz: No further explanation is necessary. That’s all.

Faust: That’s so cool.

Bradley: Only Oz could pull off an introduction like that.

Oz: ...

(the screen rumbles)

Faust & Bradley:
...!!

Oz: His strength is controlling lightning.

Bradley: Too slow!!

Faust: Didn’t you just say no further explanation was necessary!?

Faust's 2025 Birthday Lines

Central Country

Oz
"Faust, I’m giving you this cursed tool. I acquired it on a whim some time ago, but as someone whose livelihood revolves around curses, you’re a more fitting owner. ...No need to thank me. If you feel there’s no reason to accept it, think of it as a birthday gift."

Arthur
"Happy birthday, Faust. I heard you were tailoring your own clothes in Valley of Storms. Actually, Heathcliff and I are planning to learn how to make clothes from Chloe soon. If you’d like, why don’t you join us? I’m sure it’ll be a fun time."

Cain
"Good morning, is someone there? Touch my hand... Ah, it’s Faust—wait, Faust!? Hey, get back to your room quickly! No, sorry, it’s not your fault, but Heath and Shino just headed to your room saying they wanted to be the first to celebrate. Hurry, run...!"

Riquet
"Today is Faust’s birthday, isn’t it? I truly admire his meticulousness and precision. Just the other day, I was amazed to see him evenly divide food for five cats into exactly five portions! But the cats immediately started fighting, and he scolded them, saying, 'Hey! Everyone has the same amount!'"

▼ Northern Country

Snow
"So that's why Heathcliff and Shino have been restless—it’s Faust’s birthday today. Watching the wizards of the Eastern Country interact like that gives me an oddly warm feeling. Well then, let’s head over and express our appreciation for his teaching efforts."

White
"I passed by Faust’s room earlier and heard Lennox’s singing coming from inside. As I was peeking in to check, Faust caught me and opened the door. Hohoho, I also overheard Faust laughing—it seems he was happy to receive congratulations from his former servant."

Mithra
"Faust, this is the cat you were fussing over in the courtyard, isn’t it? It’s been meowing incessantly and following me around—so noisy. ...Here, I’m passing it back to you. Oh, and happy birthday."

Owen
"Happy birthday, Faust. On a day like this, don’t you feel like cursing people as you please, or laughing at those miserable souls wandering the streets? If you do, I’m happy to join you. ...What? You’ll pass? Haha, what a pity."

Bradley
"Eastern Curse-seller, take this. ‘The Cursed Elixir’... It’s said to be more delicious than any liquor in the world, but whoever drinks it will be haunted by spirits until the day they die. ...True or false, shall we find out right here and now?"

▼ Eastern Country

Faust
"Words of blessing don’t suit someone like me, a curse-seller. However, I can’t disregard the feelings of those who have celebrated me. Thank you, Kenja. I gratefully accept your blessing."

Shino
"Happy birthday, Faust. You, Heath, and Nero are still my favorites, as always. Have some confidence. After all, you give me the same in return."

Heathcliff
"Happy birthday, Professor Faust. Actually, I have a letter from my parents... They said they’re always grateful for your help and wanted to express their thanks. It’s quite a stack of letters, along with some gifts. Would you mind accepting them...?"

Nero
"Happy birthday, Faust. Honestly, I’m glad you’re the one serving as the teacher for the Eastern Country. I mean, I’m too careless, and that kind of role doesn’t suit me. ...More than anything, you’ve saved so many lives. So, well, maybe it’s okay for you to have a bit more confidence in yourself."

▼ Western Country

Shylock
"Faust, today is your birthday, isn’t it? I’ve prepared some vintage wine and special appetizers for you. You’re welcome to enjoy them while conversing or savor them alone in your own time. Please, have a pleasant and comfortable celebration."

Murr
"Today is Faust’s birthday! To celebrate, I’ll transform into a cat and play with him. Hey, Kenja-sama, do you think Faust will realize the cat in front of him is actually me? If you’re unsure, why don’t you transform into a cat too and find out! 《Eanul Rambul!"

Chloe
"I found these glasses at a shop I happened to stop by. Would you take them if you like them? The moment I saw them, I thought, 'These are perfect for Faust!' and just had to get them... Oh, if you don’t like them, don’t force yourself... What? You’ll try them on later when you’re alone? Wow, thank you!"

Rustica
"Happy birthday, Faust. The orchestra you conduct will surely play a melody that is both gentle and courageous. ...So don’t worry. You’ll become a wonderful conductor. You have the official endorsement of Rustica Ferch, the musician."

▼ Southern Country

Figaro
"Happy birthday, Faust. ...Haha, what’s with that awkward expression? Good grief, I thought maybe this time you’d accept the celebration gracefully. But really, isn’t it only natural to want to celebrate your birthday?"

Rutile
"Happy birthday, Faust. ...Haha, you seem to be in a good mood. Have you already started drinking? Let me have just a sip—huh? Wait, isn’t this that incredibly strong drink you sealed away last time, saying, ‘I’ll never drink this again’? Oh no, someone, get some water...!"

Lennox
"Lord Faust, when discussing a gift for you with everyone, it was suggested that I wear cat ears to celebrate. I declined, thinking you’d be unsure how to react... Haha. But knowing my little joke brought a smile to your face—it makes me so happy."

Mitile
"Since this morning, for some reason, Professor Figaro has been in a great mood. His footsteps seem a bit lighter, and he’s been humming more than usual... Could he be that happy about Faust’s birthday? Is it because they’re fellow teacher figures? Hmm...?"

Tea Leaves Unfold, Sharing a Time of Fellowship - Short Story (2)

Chloe: Hey, hey, did you hear?

Chloe: Apparently, Arthur and the others invited Kenja-sama to host a special tea party!

Shino: I know. It's one of those "mixers," right? (Note - he uses the word Goukon which is something that often comes up in Mahoyaku)

Mitile: I heard about it too!

Mitile: But that day, I have plans to go to the southern country with my older brother, so I can’t join.

Shino: I also have something to do that day in Sherwood Forest.

Chloe: Oh, really? Actually, I also have plans to see an opera with Rustica that day.

Chloe: But still, I really want to have a tea party with Kenja-sama too! So, I was thinking...

Chloe: What do you guys think about having the tea party twice?

Shino & Mitile: Twice?

Chloe: Yes! We’ll have the tea party again at night. That way, more people will be able to join, right?

Mitile: Wow. That sounds great!

Shino: If we’re going to do it, let’s make it a surprise. It’ll be fun to see Kenja’s surprised face.

Chloe: Yay, it's decided!

Chloe: Then, I’ll come up with different outfits for the day and night.

Chloe: I wonder what I should go with~. By the way, this is the design for the daytime outfit—what do you think?

Mitile: Wow, it’s cool~!

Mitile: The tie at the chest and the cloak make it look like a prince, it’s really refreshing.

Shino: In that case, let’s go with something different for the night. Like, a "messenger of the dark night" kind of vibe.

Chloe & Mitile: A... messenger of the dark night...?

Chloe: The sound of that is so exciting~!

Shino: An outfit that would look good on a strong person would be nice too. Something with a big fur coat.

Shino: If needed, I’ll go hunt for it, 22 pieces. I’ll gather food while I’m at it.

Mitile: Eh!

Chloe: Haha, as expected of Shino! You’re so reliable.

Chloe: True, adding fur would make the outfit look really wild.

Chloe: Anything else you’d like to request? Let me know whatever comes to mind!

Mitile: Hmm... …Oh!

Mitile: How about something a bit torn, like Bradley’s coat?

Mitile: Once, I asked him why he didn’t fix it, and he said, “This is how it’s supposed to be.”

Mitile: Then he told me, “A kid wouldn’t understand,” and I was so frustrated!

Shino: It’s true, clothes with a ripped look feel like they’ve been through a battle, which is pretty cool.

Chloe: I see, I see... So, intentionally going for a tattered but cool vibe, huh...

Chloe: Alright! How about this direction for the design?

Shino & Mitile: Oh…! Cool!

Mitile: To come up with such an amazing design so quickly—Chloe, you’re incredible!

Chloe: Hehe, it’s thanks to you two!

Mitile: Oh, but this part here—the stomach is showing a bit.

Mitile: If someone wore this, Figaro-sensei might scold them, saying, “Your stomach will catch a chill!”

Shino: Don’t worry. That’s what the fur is for.

Mitile: Ah, that makes sense!

Chloe: Alright! Next, I’ll need to get some fabric.

Chloe: Would you two like to go shopping with me?

Chloe: Let’s create the most impressively wild outfits that’ll leave everyone speechless!

Shino & Mitile: Yeah!

My Boom Voices

As part of the Anime Collaboration Campaign, each wizard received a new "My Boom" voice line that was available as part of the Learn About the Wizards! Limited-Time Quests.

This page will be updated as more voices are added to the game.

My Boom Voice

Cain
Recently, I’ve been into brewing coffee. I’ve been buying slightly better beans and grinding them myself... but one time, when I was making coffee in front of Heath, he interrupted me, saying, “Sit down, I’ll do it!” and took over halfway through. Heath’s coffee? Yeah, it was on a whole different level of deliciousness!

 Heathcliff
Lately, I’ve taken an interest in looking at intricate clothing decorations and lace patterns. Seeing how such delicate designs can be created by weaving fine threads together fascinates me. I often find myself engrossed in conversations about it with Chloe. I’ve even started to develop an interest in embroidery, so I might give it a try sometime soon.

Shylock
Collecting wine bottles has been a hobby of mine for a long time. Whenever I travel or casually stroll into a town, I step into any shop that catches my eye and buy bottles I like. It’s a way to bring back tangible memories of the places I visit, and it’s been a favorite pastime of mine both now and in the past.

Murr
Lately, I’ve gone back to tinkering with unfinished projects that I’d gotten bored of and left aside. Yesterday, I picked up something from the Sage’s world—a smartphone, I think it’s called. When I call out, “Hey, smartphone,” it responds with, “Yes!” That’s the only function it has so far—the rest is still incomplete!

Oz

My hobbies? ... Sitting in a chair by the fireplace, watching the flames flicker as time quietly passes. Sometimes, I don’t even notice it’s morning until the night has completely turned to day. ...Does that answer your question?

Bradley

I wouldn’t exactly call it a hobby, but I go hunting fairly often. Usually wherever I end up after being sneezed away or sent on missions. If I bring back some meat as a souvenir... well, you can guess the rest, right? If they don’t take my menu requests, I’ll just find another way to steer the offerings.

Faust

Recent hobbies? ...Maybe reading before bed. The book I’m currently working through is an old tome I found tucked away deep in the library’s shelves. Its contents range from simple charms to forbidden magic... It’s a challenging read to decide how far to delve.

Shino

Lately, I've been reviewing class materials with Mitile and Arthur. Since we're taking different classes, it's interesting to hear all sorts of knowledge. Recently, we talked about inviting magicians from other countries to our study sessions... In the West, it would be Chloe, right? The issue is the North. Kenja, who do you think would be a good choice?

Snow

Recently, I've been playing animal games with White. It's a game where we transform into animals and spend time unnoticed by anyone. However, the magician from the West often sees through us. Sometimes, we cast spells on Mitile and Rutile to play together. Hohoho, that bird you saw flying around you the other day, Kenja, that was me!

White

Kenja-chan, it's been a little while! ...Hohoho, you're making such a surprised face. Actually, that cat you were petting earlier was me. You gave me lots of affection. Lately, Snow and I have been hooked on transforming into animals and playing around. The next time you see a cat, it might just be me!

Arthur

Lately, my personal trend has been horseback riding with Cain and Heathcliff. I'm happy when we get excited talking about "horseback riding experiences." For example, how to handle a horse when it's in a bad mood or the difference in feel compared to riding a broomstick. Are you interested in this too, Sage?

Chloe

My recent hobby is buying souvenirs for everyone at the Magic Academy! I used to travel all the time, but I didn’t have anyone to give souvenirs to, so it feels really fresh. And since everyone seems so happy when I give them something, I end up buying all sorts of things.

Rustica

My recent hobby is you, Sage. Oh, did I surprise you? Actually, the Western Wizards are having a competition about "who understands the Sage the best." Before I know it, I spend my entire day thinking about you. Isn’t that a luxurious way to pass the time?

Riquet
I like spending time practicing portrait sketches. I get to stare at my subject closely, or sometimes, I even try drawing them from up close on purpose. Sometimes, I also get advice from Rutile. But Mitile gets embarrassed and doesn’t model for me very often… Geez, I really want to give him a drawing as a gift when I get better at it.

Figaro
Lately, I’ve been playing hand games a lot with Mitile and the others. Do they have those in your world, Sage? You know, the ones where you match hand movements to a song. When you do it face-to-face with someone and mess up the movements, you end up in a kind of hug—that part is really fun. It makes me think, “Ah, today is peaceful too.”

Lennox
Recently, I’ve been playing a game of “sugar tasting” with the Southern magicians. The idea is to guess who made which sugar. According to Mitile, mine has a slight crisp freshness amidst the sweetness. Would you like to have a taste too, Sage?

Tea Leaves Unfold, Sharing a Time of Fellowship - Short Story (1)

Snow: How refreshing, like young leaves, and what a pleasant aroma. The taste is so clean and crisp.

Rustica: I’m glad it suits your palate. It’s a special blend that can only be obtained from a specialty store in the Western Kingdom.

Lennox: As expected of something Rustica recommended. It pairs wonderfully with the scones prepared by Snow.

Rustica: The jam Lennox brought also tastes amazing. It might be worth trying a little of it with the tea.

Snow: Now then... today, I called you two here because I have a pressing matter to discuss.

Lennox: A matter to discuss?

Snow: Yes. In truth, I wish to create a theme song for the Wizard Manor with everyone’s combined efforts.

Rustica: A theme song! That sounds wonderful. This is exactly the kind of task that suits me.

Lennox: I hope I can be of help...

Snow: I heard that Arthur and White are planning a gathering to strengthen their bonds once again. That prompted me to think about the Wizard Manor anew.

Snow: And then I thought, why not a song? You see, wizards love songs, don’t they?

Snow: In preparation for the upcoming battle against the Great Calamity, uniting everyone’s hearts through song will surely power us up!

Lennox: I see... For example, how about something like this?

Lennox: Oh~ Glorious Wizard’s Manor~

Rustica: Gathered under the sage Akira~.

Snow: Oh, that sounds great!

Snow: Let’s keep going with this. We’ll include the unique characteristics of each country in the lyrics...

Snow: La la~
The fair and earnest Central Country~.
The gentle and kind Southern Country~.

Lennox: Lulu~
The cheerful and lively Western Country~.
The diligent and humble Eastern Country~.

Rustica: Wawa~
The strong and energetic Northern Country~.

Snow: That’s good!

Rustica: Marvelous.

Lennox: It’s really starting to feel like a proper theme song.

Snow: If I may be greedy, I’d like to add a little variation around this part.

Lennox: Hey, yo!

Snow: !

Snow: Lennox, what’s gotten into you all of a sudden?

Rustica: It’s powerful and wonderful.

Lennox: I thought, if we’re adding variation, why not include an up-tempo section like what I just did?

Snow: That’s so youthful! That’s exactly what I was looking for!

Lennox: I also heard that people sometimes say things like “Sha-la-la♪” as well.

Rustica: That’s great, it’ll really bring some excitement.
Let’s split the parts between me and Lennox as students, and Snow as the teacher, and try singing it as a chorus.

Rustica & Lennox: Hey, yo!

Snow: Sha-la-la♪

Rustica, Snow, & Lennox: Oh~!

Rustica: Perfect.

Lennox: It really feels invigorating.

Snow: I can already sense a masterpiece in the making. I can’t wait to unveil it!

Special Log Story - A Bouquet for Kenja-sama

This log story appeared after the 5th Anniversary story, and after the 5-City "Bouquet for Wizards" Exhibition.

Snow: Kenja, Thank you for the wonderful gift.
We love flowers very much!

White: The purple flowers you sent to us Northern Country wizards are noble, beautiful, and they suit the Northern lands perfectly.

Snow: Your heartfelt thoughts that accompany us bring a deep sense of affection to our hearts.

White: You’ve done well up until this very day.
Thank you for walking this path with us.

Snow & White: ...So, as a token of our gratitude, here’s a bouquet from us, too!
Please accept one flower from each of us!

Mithra: Here, this is a white flower I found in the Northern Country.

Mithra: The flowers you gave me weren’t bad either. Soft, and slightly sweet.

Owen: It would’ve been even better if there were some sweets so sweet they make you tingle. Don’t forget to keep showing us your appreciation from now on.

Bradley: Sometimes, a fragile flower can be more valuable than an imperishable jewel. Depends on who’s giving it, though.
You’ve got good taste, Kenja-sama.

Faust: The blue flower sent to us wizards of the Eastern Country…
Its color is serene, clear, and beautiful, like a river flowing through the depths of a forest.

Faust: Giving flowers to a curse worker like me—how unusual of you.
In return, here’s a white flower we found in the Eastern Country.

Shino: Here, take it.

Shino: I like flowers too.
Getting something from someone feels nice.
It makes me feel a little special.

Heathcliff: Because it’s a flower you chose for us, I wanted to display it beautifully, so I bought a new vase.
The windowsill looks so vibrant now that I can’t help but gaze at it.

Nero: It’s a shame they’ll wither.
How about skipping the difficult topics for the next lesson and making pressed flowers together instead?

Oz: For us Central Country wizards, you sent yellow flowers…
A bright and hopeful color, like the courageous and fearless young wizards.

Oz: If you wish, I could gather flowers from all over the country and give them to you. But today, I’ll give you this single white flower.

Arthur: Here, please accept this.
It’s something we all chose together at a flower shop in the royal capital.

Arthur: Though it’s us who should be expressing gratitude to you…
Thank you so much for always dedicating yourself to us.

Cain: No matter how much I thank you, it’ll never be enough.
I’m so glad we met. Please accept our feelings.

Riquet: Dear Kenja-sama, whom I love so much, I offer a prayer for you.
With this beautiful flower, I send blessings for you and the future we share.

Shylock: For us Western wizards, you chose a delicate, sweet, pale pink flower…
You truly have the most endearing gestures.

Shylock: After receiving such a gift, how can we possibly match it?
Let me give you a pure white flower, just like you—so genuine and honest, untouched by any color.

Murr: Here you go, Kenja-sama. Cute, isn’t it?
I found it at the wizard’s flower shop in the Town of Plenty (City of Affluence)!

Murr: This flower must love having fun too!
So, as a bonus, let’s have some fireworks! 《Eanul Rambul》!

Chloe: The flowers you gave me sparked an idea for a new design!
How about using it as the dress code theme for a tea party?

Rustica: I’m planning to use the flowers you gave me to decorate the table setting.
We’ll match the tea and sweets to the pale pink hues and create a truly delightful atmosphere.

Figaro: For us Southern wizards, you gave pale green flowers…
A gentle color, like the young leaves sprouting in early spring.

Figaro: Flowers are great, aren’t they?
They’re always there quietly, keeping you company.
Thank you for such a charming and thoughtful gift—it’s so like you.

Rutile: Here you go.
It’s a white flower I found in a meadow in the Southern Country.

Rutile: The flowers you gave us smell amazing!
We’ve been talking about making herbal tea from them after displaying them for a while.

Lennox: The sheep seem to love the scent too—they were delighted, burying themselves in the flowers.
I’ll have to be careful they don’t eat them all before we dry them.

Mitile: Once it’s ready, I’ll share some with you, Kenja-sama.
I’ll turn the warmth you gave us into a warm herbal tea and return it to you.

Oz: Akira,
We are your wizards.
We follow you and are guided by you.

Arthur: That’s why it would make me so happy if we could give back even more than what you’ve given us.

All of the Wizards: Kenja-sama,
We look forward to continuing this journey with you!

If the Affection Stories do not play with full voice acting:

    1. Please try selecting "Clear Cache" from the title menu.
